The First Motorbike Trip (October 2004)

I'm going to begin this photographic record with my first trip around the island on a motorbike. In October 2004, a four-day national holiday gave me and two friends the opportunity to get away from the city for a few days. We were blessed with four days of stunning weather and didn't have to put on our raincoats even once. As you will see from later posts, we weren't always that lucky! We camped at Chingjing Farm on the Central Cross Highway on the first night. On the second day we travelled to Taroko Gorge where we spent the night. On the third day, we travelled up the east coast before heading back into the mountains and spending our final night at Lishan.

Somewhere on the Central-Cross Highway. This was my first motorbike; a locally made 150cc Sanyang "Husky".

Autumn is a good time to see flowers in the mountains of Taiwan.

The Central-Cross Highway: A masterpiece of engineering.

Taroko Gorge: One of the most amazing sights in the whole of Taiwan, if not the whole of the world.

Spectacular mountain scenery at the town of Lishan.

National road number 8 that links Lishan to Tayuling boasts some breathtaking scenery. However, its precarious location leaves it vulnerable to typhoon damage.

A simple but effective way for farmers to bring agricultural produce from the valley to the main road.
